52 Weeks to Toxin Free DIY Air Freshener & Linen Spray

Apparently “poo-pouri” is all the rage. I see so many ads on Facebook and hear about ridding your bathroom of poo smells with this newfangled air freshener. Well I am here to tell you that shit happens. There it is! Everyone poops, even celebrities. I digress in sarcasm and little laughs to myself. Anyhow, with this “poo-pouri” business I am just in awe. In our house, we have the saying “Light a match Flannagan!” and quite literally we have boxes of matches in the bathroom. However, sometimes the methane gets the better of our environment and we are required to bring in the big guns of air freshener, but I am not one to use the chemical laden, compressed, flowery, mumbo jumbo considered air freshener. Quite frankly I would rather choke on the smell of sulfuric ass gas than chemically laced lilac and lavender.

What’s the solution? What to do when your poo gets the better of your bathroom and or environment?

I am so glad you asked! You see you can make your own non-toxic, chemical free, DIY air freshener, which also doubles as a linen spray, for your home. The recipe is super easy and the ingredients are safe, non-toxic, and have so many other purposes in our home. A few squirts of this wonderfully brisk air freshener and linen spray and your home smells crisp, without the harsh perfume scent, lingering chemicals or worse, poo masked in lilac or lavender.

pouty face, pouty face girl, Karie Herring, the Five FishAre you tired of battling the smell of butt in your bathroom? Have a smelly teenage boy, or girl, where their smells are beginning to permeate outside their bedroom, laundry room, or beyond? Even this Little Bitty is tired of the smells too…her face says it all.

So here is what you will need to make this super easy, super smell busting, DIY air freshener and linen spray for your home. Great for sprucing up your kitchen after cooking sauteed onions, fish, or any other wicked harsh smell. Excellent for those extended bathroom breaks where you pray a good wind storm kicks up to carry away the gas passed. Superb for kicking the crap (figuratively and literally) out of stinky smells of shoes, clothes, or sweaty teenage boys and girls.

  • Plain vodka (I’m sure you could use gin for the extra botanicals)
  • Glass measuring cup
  • Stainless steel spray bottle (Available at the dollar store)
  • Water (distilled is preferred, again, the dollar store)
  • Your favorite essential oils, here is my favorite brand
    • Peppermint – great for really kicking the pants of poo and smelly teens
    • Purification – need I say more, purifies the air, add this to Peppermint to really stamp out smells
    • Lavender – great for linen spray and creating a sense of calm and relaxation in your environment

Measure out two ounce of the grain alcohol, again, vodka or gin are preferred as they are fairly odorless to begin with. Add 20 drops of your favorite oils and or a combination of oils to add to 20, I generally do 15 of the Purification and 5 of the Peppermint since the mint is rather strong. Slowly pour this into your stainless steel spray bottle.

Next, measure out two ounces of water and pour into the bottle. Screw on the cap. Gently shake.

VOILA! Instant DIY air freshener and linen spray. I love to use a few squirts around my house as a just because when I am not diffusing. I have a husband, dog, three kids and everyone has their own….stench. Don’t go spending a fortune on the fancy poo-pouri that claims to have “essential oils” or the supermarket chemical laden air freshener when you can use items straight from your liquor cabinet to combat the funk.

  2. I made something similar and used rubbing alcohol and it smells like it. I am going to have to try vodka. Thank you for the recipe.

    1. Melissa yes! The rubbing alcohol makes it smell very synthetic and all you can smell is the alcohol. The distilled liquor is wonderful for helping to disburse the essential oils and that is all you smell is the essential oils.

  3. Wow, this sounds great! I love that it’s DIY so you know every ingredient that’s in it! I can’t stand alcohol though, especially liquor… Do the essential oils cover up that smell? I will definitely have to try it out, thanks for sharing! 🙂

    1. Lauren, that’s what I LOVE about this recipe is that is all you smell is the essential oils. We are not drinkers in this house so when I had a load of booze left over from past parties I put it to good use! Enjoy.

  4. Nice to know about the rubbing alcohol versus the distilled liquor. I think we must have some vodka around somewhere. I’m going to make some with Purification for our bathroom where the cat litter box is.

  5. now i have found a good use for liquor that i no longer drink. i love using all natural things b/c of my dogs so i try to limit the use of chemicals in my house and yard. thanks

  6. Thank you so much for sharing this! I have many oils that I think would work perfectly for this! Yay! I have been trying to switch to the natural side on as many things as possible! Thanks again!

  7. I have been switching over to natural products for cleaning, personal care, food, etc, and I learned some ideas in this great article! Thank you 🙂

  8. I hate the chemical smells of a lot of air freshners but I do like the smell of essential oils. I have found to that just opening a window (even in winter) is the fast way of getting rid of any odors. I also use lemon and orange essential oils all through my home. You just need a little tiny bit.

  9. love this! I have done the poo-pouri spray with cinnamon oil…teenage boys like that better than some of the other smells!

  10. I used a commercial brand freshener and the fumes were horrid. I can really use this recipe although I don’t buy alcohol. I’m sure I can find some and it’s good for other things (besides drinking).

  11. I wondered about doing this, but I wasn’t sure if it would be okay to use essential oils and get them on fabrics, carpet, etc.

  12. I like this one. I never would have thought of using vodka although there is no odor to it. Makes sense. Thanks for the tips.

  13. This recipe sounds wonderful. I hate all the chemical toxins in everything. I will be giving this a try for my house. Thank you so much for sharing

  14. Funny post and a cute spin on “poo-poori” I am with you and have matches in our bathrooms, but I do have air fresheners in other places. I can see where making your own spray would be beneficial and have a scent you like.

  15. Thank you for a great alternative to those chemical laden deodorant sprays that don’t do anything but overlay stinky smells. During spring & summer it’s easy enough to turn on the attic fan, but during the winter? Oh heck no. So this is great! Thank you for sharing!!
